How to Make Whole Milk Ricotta

August 11, 2019January 2, 2020 ~ Judy's Chickens ~ 40 Comments

Dear Reader, I’m back! I made ricotta. It was so much easier than I ever imagined. Here’s the crazy part — it takes only three ingredients, milk, salt, and vinegar, and twenty minutes. I might never have tried this had I not been cooking in the kitchen of the non-profit, The Nashville Food Project the morning fellow … Continue reading How to Make Whole Milk Ricotta

August 30, 2018January 6, 2019 ~ Judy's Chickens ~ 8 Comments

We often have a crowd around the dinner table for the three holiday weekends of summer because we have a house on the lake and we enjoy keeping it filled with family and friends. I’ve put together a list of my favorite, A.K.A. easily prepped or cooked ahead of time, recipes to serve at mealtimes.  I’m a … Continue reading Labor Day Weekend Food

Old-Timey Vanilla Bunny Cake

April 1, 2018April 5, 2020 ~ Judy's Chickens ~ 15 Comments

My mother made this bunny-shaped cake for us in the Sixties. I made it for my kids in the Nineties. Now, twenty-five years later, I am happily making it for my grandson. I love the architecture involved in creating the bunny shape out of two round cake pans as much as I love the simplicity … Continue reading Old-Timey Vanilla Bunny Cake

Once upon a time I arranged freshly cut flowers with the kids. Now it’s a thing we have to do every visit. Gosh, I love them❤️
Once upon a time, we cut flowers in the garden and made sweet little floral arrangements. Now it’s a thing. Gosh, I love them.

@doriegreenspan ‘s Summertime Tian Recipe. So darn good. This was my first attempt. It was a great recipe to use up August’s abundance of garden veggies like eggplant, zucchini, tomatoes, red onion, garlic, and basil. I had to use more veggies than called for because my pan was larger than Dorie’s. The next day (last pic) I made it again and added 1/4 tsp of crushed red pepper flakes to the bottom layer of herbs and a few shakes of balsamic vinegar just before baking. I added sweet bell peppers, too -- I have so many. Recipe can be found on @food52 #judyschickens #backyardgarden #kitchengarden #ratatouille #whole30approved
I saved this mini-pumpkin from last year’s Halloween decorations. I saved it for the seeds. I lost it. I found it on 7/26. I scraped the seeds out and planted them three different ways to be safe just in case sticking them in the soil didn't work. Five days later, I went outside to check on them. I needn’t have worried! There were lots of seedlings growing in the raised bed. The seedlings take 90 days to reach maturity. That takes us to Halloween 2022. I'm psyched! Friends, bring your children to the garden to pick #minipumpkins
Emily and Tyler!! It’s been a big, beautiful, happy. love-filled, whirlwind of a weekend.
